RESOLUTION COMMENDING LAMBDA SIGMA PHI FRATERNITY

Whereas efforts to desegregate white Greek social fraternities at The University of Alabama have proceeded for over 25 years culminating in nationwide media attention to segregation problems in 2001, and

Whereas Lambda Sigma Phi fraternity is the first white social fraternity at the University of Alabama to heed the call to become racially desegregated, and

Whereas in becoming the first white social fraternity to desegregate, Lambda Sigma Phi captures a rare, profound, and historic opportunity to turn the page on our racially divided past and to write a new chapter in the racial history of our Greek system and university, and

Whereas through desegregating white Greek social fraternities, Lambda Sigma Phi helps minorities exercise social choices not previously available at The University of Alabama, and

Whereas the desegregation efforts of Lambda Sigma Phi helps signal that minorities are welcomed, included, appreciated, and treated fairly at The University of Alabama, and

Whereas the desegregation efforts of Lambda Sigma Phi are an important step in allowing diverse groups to realize their common humanity, mutual respect, and shared delight, and

Whereas through desegregating the white fraternity system, Lambda Sigma Phi is a model of inspiration for organizations throughout the University,

Therefore be it resolved that the Faculty Senate of The University of Alabama extends its highest admiration, appreciation, and commendation to Lambda Sigma Phi for the racial desegregation that it achieved during fall semester of 2001. The Faculty Senate especially appreciates the power of example that Lambda Sigma Phi sets for all organizations on campus, whether they be Greek, non-Greek, student, faculty, or staff organizations.
