2020-2021 Student Life Committee Faculty Senate Report
Co-Chairs: Jennifer Dempsey & Ruth Ann Hall
As the co-chairs of the Faculty Senate Student Life Committee we accomplished several things during the 2020-2021 academic year. Our main accomplishments were the following:
- Establish strong lines of communication and collaboration with the newly appointed Vice President of Student Life, Dr. Myron Pope
- Spread awareness about COVID-19 policies and resources available to students at The University of Alabama program
- Support the REACH program.
We were fortunate to work with Dr. Pope this year. During our monthly meetings, we were able to ask questions and discuss what was happening in the Division of Student Life. This partnership opened lines of communication that will continue going forward.
Dr. Pope also connected the co-chairs with SGA leadership for monthly meetings. along with sitting in on the Division of Student Life updates.
The following are topics discussed during our monthly meetings with Dr. Pope:
- Getting to know Dr. Pope and connecting on yearly goals
- The Division of Student Life’s work on updating their strategic plan and strategies
- COVID-19 updates including policies for in classroom, on campus, and student events
- Reaction and updates to any topics in the news concerning student life
- Diversity updates of the Greek system
- Co-Curriculum updates: focus on growing internships, volunteerism, recruitment; “Experiential Learning”
Service update
The Faculty Senate collaborated once again with the REACH program this year during our holiday “wish list” drive and grab bags during spring finals.
The REACH program is an important program that serves students who grew up in foster care, orphaned, emancipated minors, or who have or are currently homeless. The plan is to continue with this organization as an overall Faculty Senate service project.
